The Full Story
Hello, my name is Sean Murphy, and I am a CPA in North Carolina and Oregon and a CIA (Certified Internal Auditor). I don't do taxes; I am on the audit side of the CPA spectrum. While I have worked as an independent external auditor, I also don't provide attestation services.
I am an independent consultant who has lots of cross-functional experience in business, government, and life. I like to apply myself to solving problems that reduce rework, improve operations, enhance internal controls, and make the world a little bit better. When I have interesting and challenging work that meets these goals, I am excited to get up each day and tackle my to do list.
Most recently, I was the Audit Director of the tribal government of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon and its gaming enterprise, Spirit Mountain Casino, before returning to independent consulting in February 2026.
I moved to Oregon in 2021 from Charlotte, NC, with my wife for her career in the wine industry. Before becoming a CPA, I worked in the food and beverage industry for over a decade. I love food, wine, and the hospitality business. I am not an expert on wine; however, if it helps, I am married to one and have a large circle of friends who are in the wine business. I also have a lot of colleagues in the comedy business in the Portland area from standup and documentary filmmaking.
I own about 200 cookbooks. I don’t know if that is a qualification. I once aspired to be like Julia Child, Thomas Keller, or Jacques Pépin. I spent my teens and the first half of my twenties learning to be a really, really good cook, working in some unknown but banging kitchens. I'm a good home cook now.
I wasn’t great at life in a lot of ways when I was younger, and I wasn’t making enough money during those days. So, I went back to school at 26 and earned a B.S. in Business Administration with a major in Accounting. I followed up with a Master of Accountancy before sitting for the CPA exams and joining the world of corpo-humanism, where I later became a Certified Internal Auditor in 2016.
I have worked for Deloitte & Touche LLP, Goodrich Corporation (now part of Raytheon), Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., Sealed Air Corporation, and The Siegfried Group, where I worked with clients Duke Energy Corporation and Coca-Cola Bottling as a consultant.
During college, I completed two study abroad programs: Lyon, France (one year) and Copenhagen, Denmark (three months). They were two of the best experiences of my life, which I recommend to anyone at any point in their life.
I have a lot of experience. I like to learn by trial and error to dial it in. That's how I have been learning to do standup comedy and documentary filmmaking over the last three years in Portland as a side hustle.
I have worn a lot of hats, so I can adapt as necessary. I am a generalist with a lot of specialties. I leverage advanced computing (AI), but I understand that it will never replace the human touch.
My wife and I currently live in McMinnville, OR, near Linfield University with our two pups, and I also perform and produce comedy in the Willamette Valley and Portland as a hobby.
I like to wear Nikes/Air Jordans, Clarks, and Ariat boots.
